About Woolston Brass

Since its formation in 1891 as The Woolston Band this now iconic performing arts organisation has maintained a playing strength of around forty musicians, with members drawn from all walks of life brought together by a creative talent for making music. The band has remained true to the ideal expressed in its Maori motto, Tohea kia kaha (Persevere, so there is Strength).

Woolston Brass' 126-year history records an abundance of championship success, overseas expeditions and colourful characters, whom many have been selected for current and past National and Youth Bands of New Zealand. Milestones include winning the Edinburgh Festival Contest; gaining fifth place in the 1975 British Open Championships; and achieving four-in-a-row at the national contest in 2012.

At the Wellington National Brass Band Championships this year, Woolston Brass maintained the band's reputation with success in the solo and party events. In the band events this year, Woolston Brass won the Street March and also gained 3rd place in the A Grade Championship. Woolston Concert Brass gained 2nd place in the C Grade Championship.

Woolston Brass takes great pride in its pioneering education programme. From its inception to the early 1990s as The Woolston Auxiliary Band to its rebirth in the 1990s as The Woolston Brass Academy, the programme has grown to include a learners' group, and two training bands; Woolston Junior Band and Woolston Concert Brass. Each of these groups caters for a specific level of ability and meets each Tuesday night of the school term.
