Nau mai, haere mai, tauti mai. The Ōtākaro (Avon River), once a major highway, still flows through the heart of the city, a witness to our past, present and future. On this 40-minute walking tour Joseph Hullen (Ngāi Tūāhuriri, Ngāi Tahu) will take you back in time on a journey along the banks of the river. He will show you significant settlement sites, talk about the resources that encouraged people to live here and explain how Māori & European interacted in the early period of European contact.

He will uncover the city’s rich history that hides in plain sight. He will show you significant settlement sites, talk about the resources that encouraged people to live here and explain how Māori and European interacted in the early period of European contact.

Walk leaves from The Piano, 156 Armagh Street. Light refreshments to be served afterwards.
